Analysis of Substance P

Test Procedure

You are provided with organic substance P. Carry out the tests below and write down your observations and inferences in the spaces provided.

  • (a) Using a metallic spatula, burn small amount of substance P on a non-luminous flame
  • (b) (b) Place the remaining Substance P in a boiling tube and dissolve in 10cm3 of distilled water. Divide the resulting solution into 3 portions T1, T2 & T3.
    • (i) To the 1st portion, add 3 drops of acidified potassium manganate (vii)
    • (ii) To the 2nd portion, add 3 drops of bromine water.
    • (iii) To the 3rd portion, add 2 to 3 drops of universal indicator solution and determine its pH using pH chart.
